The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima

The first apparition took place in 1917, in Cova da Iria, at the site of the current Sanctuary. The most important celebrations are held on 13th May (including the Candlelit Procession on the night of the 12th and the Farewell Procession closing the event on the 13th) and 13th October. Furthermore, the 13th of every month between these two dates is also a day of devotion. This Marian pilgrimage center evokes the apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children, Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, which occurred in 1917 and were recognized in 1930. The site was a rural property called Cova da Iria, belonging to Lucia's parents, who donated it to the sanctuary. Five of the six apparitions took place here. The Sanctuary includes the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Prayer Area, and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity. Aljustrel, 4 km from the Sanctuary of Fatima, is where the three visionaries of Fatima were born. In this village, we can see firsthand the essence of simplicity that guided the lives of Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta. Additional information will be provided during the tour. Key Dates to Visit Fatima May 12th & 13th (The Anniversary Pilgrimage): These are the most important dates of the year, celebrating the first apparition in 1917. The Candlelight Procession on the night of the 12th and the Farewell Procession on the 13th are unique spiritual events. October 12th & 13th (The Miracle of the Sun): Marks the final apparition of 1917. It is the second largest pilgrimage of the year, attracting thousands of visitors. Fatima: Anniversary Pilgrimage Program (Every 13th) The celebrations for the 13th of each month (from May to October) follow a traditional and deeply spiritual schedule, starting on the eve (the 12th). The Eve (12th of the Month) - 9:30 PM – International Rosary / at the Chapel of the Apparitions. - Candlelight Procession: The most iconic moment, where thousands of pilgrims carry lit candles while the Statue of Our Lady processes through the Prayer Grounds. - Overnight Vigil: Continuous prayer services held throughout the night in the Sanctuaries. The Feast Day (13th of the Month) - 9:00 AM – Morning Rosary: Opening prayers at the Chapel. - 10:00 AM – International Mass: A solemn outdoor Mass held at the large altar in the Prayer Grounds. - Blessing of the Sick: A moving moment during the Mass dedicated to those seeking healing. - Farewell Procession (Procissão do Adeus): The closing ceremony where pilgrims wave white handkerchiefs as the Statue of Our Lady returns to the Chapel.
